Dear English Scholars!
After today's reading in class, I would like to hear your personal thoughts on the question raised in the article. It was a controversial decision for one Manchester school but the increase in results was astounding! Do you feel it is breaching your rights to tell you how to speak? Your thoughts in a couple of sentences please...
Slang should not be banned as it is a way for people to express themselves as an individual and no one has the right to tell you how to speak as you have the right to freedom of speech.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren because everyone has the right to speech. Just because the older generations don't understand them they don't have the right to force them to change their lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite a good idea and I think it would be very beneficial to our education and help us in the real world. However, I disagree with it. This is because it is a very basic human right to have free speech and the thought of our schools changing our speech and taking away a human right is only just short of horrific.
ReplyDeleteI think that a compromise could be reached to ensure both parties happiness on the subject. In the classroom students should speak appropriately. Outside the classroom students should be able to speak using their personal form of slang without fear of being reprimanded for their expression of individuality.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be silly for schools to bang slang because it is just a way that almost every child communicates nowadays and it is part of their lifestyles. It wont affect our futures a lot because we have plenty of time before we have to go out and get jobs so we can change our whole appearance and the way we come across before then. Also it is part of having freedom of speech and thats why I think that kids should be able to speak hpwever they want.
ReplyDeleteI get how teachers think that teenagers use slang so much that it could affect us in the future but I think that we shouldn't have to be controlled in the way that we speak because it is agenst our human rights to stop us from speaking in a certain way or saying something. The way we talk is part of our personality and what makes us unique so why should people change that? We can choose the way we speak because we have freedom of speach, so we shouldn't be punished in the way we chose to speak.
ReplyDeleteI think it wouldn't be a good idea to ban slang in schools as I don't quite understand how it would actually make your grades better, It's not like slang is written down anyway and also it would be violating our rights of speech, there is still appropriacy and people still know when to turn it off it's just becoming more common and accepted in more situations.
ReplyDeleteJust because some people can't be bothered to understand or learn about slang doesn't mean it should be banned for good. The need for slang is perfectly understandable. It makes us unique and life would be boring and we would all be robots or something if we all sounded and spoke in exactly the same way.
ReplyDeleteIt is my feeling that slang shouldn't be banned in schools because everyone has the right to speak how they want. The way you speak is part of your personality. However, when it comes to exams, they would be used to saying and using slang, so they would write slang down on their test, resulting in poor results.
ReplyDeleteI believe that slang shouldn't be banded from school as it a way for people to express their views, also the older generation can't stop the younger generation from saying things as everyone has the right to say what they want.
ReplyDeleteIf students get into a habit of speaking slang to authority figures, they would give an unprofessional impression to job interviewers. Also there are a lot prejudices associated with people who use slang in the job world. Learning standard English isn't going to stop you expressing your views, in fact it will help you articulate your point better.
ReplyDeleteI think that slang should not be banned in school. This is because people should be able to speak the way they want without being moaned at by the older people and teachers. Slang should not be frowned upon, its not as if teenagers are swearing all the time. they are just talking how they want to...
ReplyDeleteI think slang shouldn't be banned from schools because it's the way that teenagers feel they express themselves better. Every person has to right to freedom of speech and this right can not be violated just because a person is speaking slang, which you don't understand, or aren't comfortable with. It's a personal choice of how you choose to speak, and that's good as, that way, you feel you're expressing yourself better.
ReplyDeleteI think that slang should be banned in schools, as it is becoming an increasingly serious problem that teenagers find it difficult to use any other form of language, other than slang. However, if there was a ban, it would be near impossible to enforce, without a breach of personal privacy, which could lead to a lot of students who feel that they are being caged, which could in turn lead to behavioural problems, which could be more of a problem than the use of slang. Looking outside of schools, when these teens made their way into the world, and they weren't using slang, it would most likely have a positive effect. They would find it easier to get a job and most likely find it easier to get their point across.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that slag should be banned in schools as it is a way for people to express feelings and views to others. It also helps teenagers feel like they belong to a group. However, overusing slang can lead to teenagers not knowing when it is appropriate to use slang or not. This could mean that in interviews ,and other formal situations, it would be hard for people to understand and also hard for the individual to get their point across.
ReplyDeletei dont think slang should be banned from school since i do not think it is possible to track every word a student has says that could come across as slang and you should not be punished for the way you speak as you have a human right of freedom of speech however i think people who use slang more commonly in the way they speak might struggle more to find a job then people who use it less in there speech.
ReplyDeleteI don't think slang should be banned as people have a right to speak as they wish that is if they know when and when to use it. Why should it be banned, just because older members of the community can not understand the slang doesn't mean it should go. They could get to understand and know the language if they tried so they wouldn't feel cut off. So it should not be banned however if people do not know when to stop using it and do not know when it is appropriate then it should be banned in classrooms but not outside of class.
ReplyDeleteI do not think slang should be banned in schools as teenagers feel as it is a unique way to talk in groups. Although I feel that slang should only be used in the right environment. In formal situations, such as public speaking or addressing teachers, I do not think slang should be used because it is unsuited to their generation. Whereas when speaking to friends this can be used to express views or opinions.
ReplyDeleteI think slang should not be banned in schools because one of the human rights is a freedom of speech and this will be going against that right. Also slag is a way teenagers express themselves and whether it is banned in schools or not the language will still be used so what's the point in it being banned? However I do feel that slang has become very strong and used too much. I think that students should realise when it is appropriate and when not.
ReplyDeleteI think that this idea is really stupid as it would never work as slang is already imprinted into every child's vocabulary and is a common feature in convocation in all areas of Britain. However I do think that children should be thought when and when not to use slang and how to recognise when formal convosation is necessary.
ReplyDeleteI would consider the concept of slang to be part of the evolution of language. Nowadays, you wouldn't expect children or teenagers to communicate in the exact same way their parents used to speak when they were at school as The younger generation have a different capability of adapting the language in comparison to thir parents or teachers. However, when it comes to formal situations, such as job interviews or formal discussions, the idea of slang should certainly be ignored because the way you speak will of course differ in various contexts which is why you should only use certain words or phrases when you think it's appropriate. To sum it all up , I don't think that using slang should be prohibited within the school, especially when you're talking to you're friends because I'm sure that kids will understand when to use the correct words or phrases and their appropriacy when they get older anyway.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that slang should be banned from schools across the UK as many students use slang in their speech, whether anyone likes it not. But comments above ^ have been using the term 'freedom of speech' as an argument towards slang not being banned. Realistically, has slang and the way people speak got anything to do with 'freedom of speech'? If schools banned students from using slang, it is NOT violating their freedom of speech, all it is doing is changing the way people talk, they still have their say in things, but banning slang is just stopping students from harming their education, it is not to give them a disadvantage in a human right. But overall, I don't think it would be right to ban slang.
ReplyDeleteI don't think slang should be banned because you should be able to speak freely and comfortably around you friends. On the other hand I think that some people, particularly adults, find slang offensive, rude and innapropriat. Also people who are used to speaking slang interpret it into there every day life, meaning that you could possibly be thought of as uneducated and have a hard time finding work. Therefore I believe that it shouldnt be banned but students shouldn't talk slang in class.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in addition to Max's point, the ban would never work because it is like taking away a part of their personality and even taking away a human right. Also, I can imagine the ban going way too far and the end result being that teachers and staff start monitoring student's speech, which would make them feel threatened and freaked out and then they may even feel scared to talk or express themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that slang should not be banned in schools as it is a natural part of speech. If students are using slang words in all other situations other than school they would be bound to use it by accident during school, which would be unfair. However, I do feel that teachers should encourage students to refrain from using it when explaining their opinions as they need to be able to do so for exams. Also, class is a more formal environment than that in lunch times and some people need to know when it is appropriate to use slang.
ReplyDeleteI do not think banning slang from being used in schools is right because it is a way some teenagers choose to communicate with their peers however I think some teenagers may often forgot when it is appropriate to use slang or not. Although I agree with students being taught how to speak correctly, it is entirely their choice how they wish to speak.
ReplyDeleteI dont believe that slang should be banned from school because for the majority of the students its a way of communicating to one and other and creating jokes within the group. On the other hand though if slang was banned I would think it would get the students to talk how they should in the outer world when going for a job interview and there english would improve as they wouldnt have any extra vocabulary that isnt needed.
